Chattanooga Times / Chattanooga Free Press, 18 March 2000, by Kevin McDonough c. United Feature Syndicate Find TV's Best Ghost Stories on 'The Others' ----------------------------------------------------------- (excerpt) * Best known for its addictive "True Hollywood Story" series, the E! network presents its first original movie. Call it an untrue Hollywood story. The comedy mystery, "Best Actress" (9 p.m., Sunday, TV-14, L, S, V) concerns five Oscar-nominated leading ladies and their desperate antics in the weeks before the Academy Awards. Based on a novel by John Kane, the story is narrated by Ted (Thomas Calabro), or rather the ghost of Ted, a sneaky screenwriter wannabe who is killed by one of the desperate thespians, that includes the boozy diva Connie (Loretta Devine), the trashy starlet Amber (Jordan Ladd), the prim British stage actress Fiona (Rachel Hunter), the adult-film star turned serious actress Karen (Jamie Pressly) and the closeted lesbian Lori (Elisa Donovan), who fears that her nomination will force her out of the closet. Rounding out the over-the-top ensemble is Anthony Head ("Buffy") who plays Fiona's philandering husband, Colin, and Maria Conchita Alonso as Lori's feisty lover, Maria, who puts the move on Fiona when Lori plays it straight for the pre-Oscar press. For all of its attempts to send up the oh-so-shocking mores of Hollywood Babylon, "Best Actress" is often more obvious than clever. ----------------------------------------------------------- Bentley's Bedlam http://www.BetsyDa.com/bedlam.html This website is for information and entertainment purposes only and is not intended to infringe on copyrights held by others.
