Evening Standard, 14 July 1993, by Robin Stringer "Right blend for coffee lover" ----------------------------------------------------------- FAMILIAR to millions as the Gold Blend advertisement man forever flirting with Sharon Maughan, Anthony Head is currently pursuing a different kind of ambition to great effect. He is appearing in the Chichester Festival's intimate Minerva Theatre studio in a new production of Patrick Hamilton's classic thriller *Rope*, which has won immediate praise from the critics. The Evening Standard described it as 'near-faultless'. Head plays Rupert Cadell, a fastidious poet invited by two handsome bored young men to dine along with other guests off a chest which contains the remains of the young man they have murdered. Debra Beaumont is one of those friends, a rather frivolous girl not at all in tune with the disillusioned Cadell, a casualty of the trenches. The suspense in the play lies in wondering whether the murderers will be discovered. But, according to director Keith Baxter, the play is far more than a cunningly crafted pot-boiler. 'We are moved during the course of the action,' he says, 'to a dreadful admiration for the killers' effrontery, wondering at the same time what we would do if we suspected someone we loved to be a monster.'
