Liverpool Echo, 19 February 2002. "Boy, Nigel just loves *Manchild*." ----------------------------------------------------------- "It's politically incorrect and I relish that. I think a lot of men will watching it and say: 'I've always wanted to say that.'" Nigel Havers is talking about the new comedy drama *Manchild*, in which he plays Terry, a childish divorced stockbroker with plenty of spare time and vast quantities of cash to help fill it. "I was hunting around to find a really good comedy," says Nigel. "*Manchild* came so far ahead of the rest, I just had to do it. It's very intelligently written. "It's good to have a grown-up subject. It's about men in their late 40s having a really good time. It's fun." Since he first blazed into the public's imagination in Oscar-winning film *Chariots of Fire*, Nigel Havers has been perceived as the archetypal ladies' man. His roles in *The Charmer* and, more recently, as aristocratic burglar Raffles, have allowed him to become one Britain's leading TV actors. Other successes include the popular comedy series *Don't Wait Up* and medical drama *Dangerfield*. Although the new role reiterates his cad-life characters, he shows a more laddish streak. "I suppose there is a lot of me that I've put into Terry. He's a great character to play. He has this beautiful, 25- year-old girlfriend with whom he has nothing in common. "He's rather angst-ridden over his ex-wife's relationship with a trendy fashion designer. But his main relationships are his strong friendships with the boys. "You really believe they've all known each other since school." Following his recent successful nationwide tour in the hit stage play *Art*, he denies this latest role was simply a desire to play with big boys' toys. "It's so true to life! - great television. "The boys - Terry, Patrick (Don Warrington), Gary (Ray Burdis) and James (*Buffy* star Anthony Head) - have lots of toys to play with. I'd like to have kept them all - particularly the cars. "I really enjoyed Terrys BMW R1100 bike." Nigel's immediate plans will see him appear in BBC1 thriller *Murder in Mind*, followed by a return to the stage. But his enjoyment of *Manchild* and the bond with his co- stars leads him to hope for a second series. *Manchild* (BBC2, 10pm). ----------------------------------------------------------- Bentley's Bedlam http://www.BetsyDa.com/bedlam.html This website is for information and entertainment purposes only and is not intended to infringe on copyrights held by others.
