Somerset Guardian, March 22, 2001, by Wendy Walker "Buffy star to visit school" ----------------------------------------------------------- One hundred years of education in Writhlington will be celebrated this summer. Parties, the release of 100 pigeons and a visit from the actor who plays the professor in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer series are some of the events planned. St Mary's Church of England Primary School will be marking its centenary with a host of events timed for June. The five-class school had its origins in a small Victorian building and it has expanded considerably since then. "We are now planning a new hall with a staff room and linked covered walkway for the children," said new headteacher Ruth Haines. To help the new generations contrast the St Mary's of today with that of yesterday, she and her staff would like to hear from anyone who went to St Mary's in past years. They should contact the school at Old Road, Writhlington BA3 3NG, or telephone 01761 434548. They could find themselves at any one of a series of June events. On Sunday June 10, there will be a slide show showing Old Writhlington, by Dennis Chedgy. This takes place at 7.30pm in the village hall. During the week of June 11 to June 15, each class will visit Radstock Museum. On Wednesday June 13, there will be a birthday party for the children which is when, depending on their availability, they are hoping to release 100 pigeons. This depends on foot and mouth restrictions, for pigeon clubs have imposed a voluntary suspension of activities. On Friday June 15 the school has an open afternoon for anyone who used to attend or work at the school. Actor Anthony Head, who plays Buffy's professor in the Vampire Slayer series, will b at a celebration barbecue family night on Friday June 29. ----------------------------------------------------------- Bentley's Bedlam http://www.BetsyDa.com/bedlam.html This website is for information and entertainment purposes only and is not intended to infringe on copyrights held by others.
