Sunday Telegraph, October 20, 1979. (London Day By Day) "Belgian courage" ----------------------------------------------------------- Thanks to the BBC's *Secret Army* series, many more now know of the wartime activities of Belgian Resistance fighters and in particular of their highly successful efforts to rescue British and Commonwealth aircrew shot down over their country. The airmen were harboured in houses in Brussels, then taken down the famous "Comete" lines through occupied France and over the Spanish frontier near Biarritz. They paid heavily for their courage, and their sacrifice is annualy remembered on Oct. 20, the day in 1943 when seven of them were executed by the Gestapo on the spot where Edith Cavell had been shot 28 years ago. Today's memorial service in Brussels will be attended by 30 members of the R.A.F. Escaping Society. Britain's Military Representative at Nato, Air Chief Marshall Sir Alasdair Steedman, who is leading the British visitors, told me from Brussels that British television viewers have been well- informed by *Secret Army*; though the characters are fictitious the facts are true. ----------------------------------------------------------- Bentley's Bedlam http://www.BetsyDa.com/bedlam.html This website is for information and entertainment purposes only and is not intended to infringe on copyrights held by others.
