This time the plot has an American actor, working in Britain on a cop show not a million miles removed from Dumpy and Makeshift, married in real life to his on-screen girl friend and self- obsesed enough to live out his screen character by tackling genuine mysteries. Shoetring meets Sam Spade, or in this case, Jack Nicholson meets James Dean, because David Andrews sounds like the former and looks like the latter--a combination that should serve him well. Pulaski is nicely tricky, wonderfully wicked about its own medium, and the humour of the first episode was hopefully more forced than it will be when the series shakes down. Certainly, it already offers a better class of wit than most of the current sitcoms.
