Toronto Star, August 25, 2000, by Daphne Gordon "Aliens Land for Comic Book Expo" ----------------------------------------------------------- If you happen to run into an Alien on the street this weekend, don't be alarmed. It's not the Final Conflict. It's probably just one of the Next Generation of sci-fi fans who have landed in town for the sixth annual Science Fiction Expo. A record number of attendees are expected to drop into the Metro Toronto Convention Centre for the show, which is part of the Canadian National Comic Book Expo, promoter Aman Gupta says. And some of them will be in costume for the annual masquerade, he warns, so beware of Klingons, X-Men and vampire slayers in the Front St. area. About 10,000 people attended the comics expo last year, but this time out, as many as 15,000 are expected. With more than 250 exhibits covering 100,000 square feet, the show has grown to become the biggest of its kind in Canada and the third largest in North America. Fans will be there mainly to meet a large contingent of sci- fi celebrities who have agreed to sign autographs and answer questions, Gupta says. Among the celebs: popular wrestler Mankind (Mick Foley) of the World Wrestling Federation; Jonathan Frakes, who played William Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation; Roxann Dawson, who is B'Elanna Torres on Star Trek Voyager; Anthony Stewart Head, who plays Giles on Buffy The Vampire Slayer; and Hudson Leick, who is the villain Callisto on Xena. Comic book names will include X-Men writers Adam Kubert, Chris Claremont and artist Barry Windsor Smith, as well as Incredible Hulk creator Peter David, Canadian artists Stuart Immonen (Superman) and Leonard Kirk (Supergirl) . The comic book expo begins today at 4 p.m. and runs to Sunday at 5 p.m. Admission prices start at $12.
