The Independent on Sunday, July 28, 1991, by Michael Billington. ----------------------------------------------------------- "Tovarich" is a 1930s success by Jacques Deval disturbed from its long slumber to provide a vehicle for Natalia Makarova. When it wakes up, which takes time, it allows her to exude a ravishing "hauteur" while twirling about in a maid's uniform and to fill the theatre with romantic longings for a White Russian past. She and her Grand Dukal husband (Robert Powell) are forced into domestic service with the bourgeoisie through poverty and loyalty, and some of their encounters with their dazzling Parisien employers are very funny. The evening then starts leaning on sentiment and charm, but the two stars supply both. ----------------------------------------------------------- Bentley's Bedlam http://www.BetsyDa.com/bedlam.html This website is for information and entertainment purposes only and is not intended to infringe on copyrights held by others.
