The fact that British directors such as Lynn have to go to 
Hollywood to find backing for their talent is sadly 
explained by the week's native offering, "Dakota Road" (NFT, 
no cert). In the Faber edition of the screenplay, the writer 
and director, Nick Ward, goes on about the difficulties of 
raising more than Pounds 1m to make this truly terrible 
film. But any British company that even considered putting a 
penny into so obvious and scant a screenplay must have had 
impaired judgment on a monumental scale. For the record, the 
film is about love and pollution in the Fens, with a largely 
anonymous cast being sadly misdirected, and only Liz Smith 
escaping with any credit.
