The FanNavigator is a timeline-based visualization for fan information on the Internet. The need arises for this type of visualization because fans are deluged with multiple sources of information about their favorite show, the characters, the actors, the plot, conventions, images, etc. Trying to find worthwhile sources of informatin within this (mostly fan-created) chaos of Web sites is challenging. We are developing a prototype visualization, the FanNavigator, to address the information needs of these overwhelmed fans. We are using a few core metaphors to shape our visualization, including that of the timeline. We are modelling our work after the perspective wall, data visualization sliders, and nesting, as well as using our content knowledge to develop widgets particularly useful to this domain. We are profilng Buffy the Vampire Slayer to provide proof-of concept for our visualization. We hope to provide a meaningful visualization that will display the goings-on in the real world with the world of a television show.
