Anthony Stewart Head is a tall, fair-haired Englishman who can adopt the faintly distracted air of an Oxford don. But he can also play an American with an eye for a pretty woman and a good cup of instant joe, as he did in a serialized romance played out over several Taster's Choice coffee commercials. In between, Head was a regular on the short-lived Fox science fiction series VR.5, and guest-starred on Highlander and NYPD Blue. He also has a long list of British credits, including several productions for the BBC. So how did he wind up playing a high school librarian with an encyclopedic knowledge of the occult on the WB's Buffy the Vampire Slayer? "Basically, if an interesting script comes along, I snap it up. That's what the work is about. If you get the chance to play interesting stuff, then go for it. ..." Interviewed during his summer hiatus back in his native England, Head revealed a hearty laugh, a self-deprecating sense of humor, clipped British speech sprinkled with American accents and idioms, and a working knowledge of veterinary skills. "I had to go down and give my pony an eyewash," he said, explaining while the phone interview had to be delayed. "I think the other pony gave him a whack. They play a bit rough. He's a Welsh Mountain pony, the other one's a Welsh Mountain cross. We've got three horses for the moment." "We" refers to Head, his children and his girlfriend, an animal trainer. He splits his time between England and Los Angeles, as one of the few British actors who works regularly in American television. On Buffy, the WB's first breakout hit (at least by WB standards), Head plays Rupert Giles, whose hereditary duty is to be the "Watcher" to Buffy's (Sarah Michelle Gellar) "Slayer." In each generation, one young woman has the strength and will to fight vampires. At her side is the Watcher, who helps her research ancient prophecies and demons, and plot strategies to combat them.
